Calling Artists!

URBANARTSHOW at Minto Park 6th annual show on July 23 invites local Ottawa artists to apply for an art festival unlike any other in Ottawa. Located in the downtown core on Elgin street URBANART offers artists a chance to showcase their work, sell pieces and meet their art community with a city backdrop of beautiful urban park MINTO PARK.

URBANART is taking on new goals this year! Along with a new president, Claudia Gutierrez, we are also reaching out to our urban community to refocus our vision toward the truest sense of the words urban art. We call on all local artists that represent urban culture and life as an artist in the city either through their medium or their imagery. The show will also contain a Graphic Design/Art category this year and a direct focus on contemporary media (ie. photography, textile, and recycle art and print). Collectives or artist run groups are welcome to apply as such. We also will be constructing a panel of artists and curators from the community to create a jury for the show.

Deadline for applications will be April 30 all notifications will be sent May 15 (well in advance for our July 23 show).

Please email us for an application form which would be mailed along with application fee and CD with photos of your work (links to websites are also accepted).

Moving right along...

This Spring, both myself and Katie will be coincidentally packing up and moving house (although I'll still be kicking around Ottawa) and neither one of us feels that we have the time or attention that the burgeoning Urban Art@Minto Park deserves.

In the two years since taking over the show's reigns from Christina and Dru, we are confident that Urban Art is continuing its upward trajectory and has entrenched itself as a midsummer highlight for local artists and art lovers in downtown Ottawa.

I'm extremely happy to welcome Claudia Gutierrez as the new show organizer. Her enthusiasm and vision for Urban Art will, no doubt ensure its continued success.

It has been my pleasure to meet all you Urban Artists and I look forward to seeing your work in Centretown and beyond!

Best of luck to co-organizer and my old pal and veteran artist/artisan Katie Argyle, with whom I've shared many a coffee under a canopy in rain, snow, sleet, hail and yes... even sunshine (sometimes all in one day). You've put your stamp on Ottawa Katie, now (mixed metaphor alert!) break a leg getting your foot in the door on Queen St!

Urban Art 2011 Hello! and Goodbye!

Hello Urban Artists:

The Urban Art @ Minto Park show will go on this year under the watchful eye of a new organizer: Claudia Gutierrez.

Claudia is filled with artful energy and lives in the Minto Park area so she really wants to make this thing go. She is the perfect replacement for Tim Hunt and I.

I am, sadly and reluctantly, handing over the reigns to the show to Claudia as I am moving to Toronto for, appropriately, April Fool's Day. I've been busy packing/sorting/tossing/fretting/stressing/dreaming/planning and hoping for this move since December when my fella was transferred to a Big Job in said town. We got the word that it's a permanent deal so I am off to new adventures in the Big Smoke.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their support of the show and I hope you continue to do so in the coming years. I do think it's on the verge of Something Big. But it is no longer up to me to do that, but to give it away to someone who I feel very secure knowing she's got what it takes to move the whole thing forward.

I wanted to personally say that I enjoyed meeting all of you and I hope everyone is out there pushing their art forward. Ottawa needs its artists. Please continue to do your work and show your work. If you would like to contact me personally my email is katieargyle@ yahoo.ca and updates about my art and my life in general will continue to be presented on my blog plasticmasters.blogspot.com.

I am currently working on a new website as well with a full gallery of my past and present work, but it won't be live until we are moved and settled, possibly May 2011. I'll have information about it on the blog when it's ready to be unveiled.

Good luck to all of you in 2011. May you have frutiful and profitable art adventures this year and every year.

Tim Hunt, it's been a pleasure to work with you all these years. I am surely going to miss our power breakfast meetings and our crazy ideaas that always seem like good ones at the time... you helped make Urban Art one of the fondest memories I will always have.

CBC Radio Interview: In Town and Out Sat July 24 between 7am and 9am

This week I was in a pristine recording booth with Michael Bhardwaj, the host of In Town and Out.
We were discussing the genesis of the post-it note event to happen tomorrow at the Urban Art @ Minto Park show and calling all citizens to come down and tell us what's on their minds - what will fit on a post-it note that is.
Some of us have A LOT on our minds afterall.

I was a little nervous and I don't know if I sounded loopy or not (always a hazard with me - or an asset - depends where I am I suppose), but I do remember laughing a few times and that's always good. I will be hard at work in Minto Park when the interview airs, between 7am and 9am Michael said, but I'll get to listen to the podcast I'm sure.
